Did you know that 100% of the glucose you ingest during your 3rd trimester goes to the baby?! This means if you eat any sugar or starch you will gain no effect BUT your baby will grow in size. Of course genetics play a large role in whether you have a large baby or not but consuming a lot of sugar plays a role also.
Some interesting tips from Allison & Beth (my midwives):
-Introducing more protein into your diet will help curb your cravings for sugars and starches. If you are not a meat eater then eat more eggs, nuts, and legumes.
-Consuming protein in conjunction with starch or sugar helps your body to better metabolize that sugar. This is also helpful for avoiding gestational diabetes. Some examples: eat your pasta with a meat sauce, and if you want a little chocolate eat it with nuts, have some cheese with your fruit, and sugar-free peanut butter on your toast.
